If you've never had a professional facial before, the idea of one can feel weirdly intimidating. What do you wear? Do you talk during it? Is it going to hurt? Are they going to judge your skincare routine?

Short answers: whatever's comfortable, only if you want to, no, and absolutely not. But let's walk through the whole thing so you know exactly what's coming.

Before you arrive

On the day of your appointment, keep it simple. If you wear makeup, you don't need to take it off — we'll cleanse your skin thoroughly as part of the service. Skip any strong exfoliants or retinol for 2–3 days beforehand so your skin isn't extra sensitive when you arrive. And if you're on any prescription skin medications (like Accutane) or you've had a recent sunburn, give us a heads-up so we can adjust the treatment.

Plan to arrive about 10 minutes early for your first visit. You'll fill out a quick intake form so we can learn about your skin history, any allergies, medications, and what you're hoping to get out of today.

The consultation

Before anything touches your face, we'll sit down and chat. What do you love about your skin? What's been bothering you lately? Are there specific events or goals you're working toward? This isn't a sales pitch — it's us getting a clear picture of where you are so we can customize the treatment to actually help.

No question is too basic. We've heard them all. And we'd rather you ask than guess.

Getting settled

We'll show you to the treatment room, where you'll get changed (we leave the room — you keep underwear on, and there's a soft wrap to cover up). The room is warm, dim, and quiet. The bed is heated. There's soft music. It's genuinely one of the most relaxing hours of your week.

The facial itself

Every facial is different depending on your skin, but here's the general flow:

  • Cleansing. A thorough double cleanse to remove makeup, sunscreen, and the day's buildup.
  • Skin analysis. We take a closer look under a magnifying lamp to see what's happening on and under the surface — pores, texture, dehydration, congestion, pigmentation.
  • Exfoliation. This might be a gentle enzyme, a light chemical exfoliant, or a physical scrub depending on your skin. This is where we start revealing the fresh, smooth skin underneath.
  • Extractions (optional). If you have blackheads or congestion you'd like cleared, this is when we do it — gently, and only if your skin is prepped well enough that it won't traumatize the surrounding tissue.
  • Massage. A facial and neck/shoulder massage that boosts circulation and feels, honestly, incredible.
  • Mask. Customized to what your skin needs that day — hydrating, clarifying, calming, or brightening.
  • Serums, moisturizer, SPF. We finish with treatment products targeted to your concerns and always, always sunscreen.

The whole thing takes about an hour. You can talk or not talk — most clients end up dozing off, and we take that as the highest compliment.

Will it hurt?

Not really. Extractions can feel like a tiny pinch if you have stubborn congestion, but a good esthetician will stop if your skin isn't cooperating. Everything else should feel pleasant — cool, warm, relaxing, tingly at most.

After your facial

Your skin might be a little pink or flushed for an hour or two. That's normal — it's circulation, not irritation. For the rest of the day:

  • Skip makeup if you can (let your skin breathe and absorb).
  • No hot yoga, saunas, or intense workouts for 24 hours.
  • No retinol or strong actives that night.
  • Wear SPF the next day, no excuses.

You'll leave with a take-home recommendation — a couple of products or habits that'll extend your results and help your skin between visits. And if you want to rebook, we'll help you figure out the right cadence (most people do monthly).

That's it. You're in.

A good facial isn't a luxury — it's maintenance that your skin will thank you for. And the first one is always the most nerve-wracking, so now you've got that part handled.
