Let's just say it: if you live in Florida and you're not wearing sunscreen every single day, you're undoing everything else you're doing for your skin.

We're not trying to be dramatic. But when clients come in asking why their $200 serum isn't working, or why their melasma keeps coming back, or why their skin looks older than they feel — SPF is almost always part of the answer.

Florida sun isn't like other sun.

At our latitude, UV exposure stays strong year-round. Not just July. Not just when you're at the beach. The UV index in High Springs regularly hits 10 or 11 in the summer — and even in January, we're getting enough sun to cause real damage.

And here's what most people don't realize: UV rays pass right through clouds and car windows. That commute to work? Sun damage. Sitting by the window at lunch? Sun damage. Running errands on an overcast day? Yep.

What SPF actually does.

Sunscreen isn't just about preventing sunburn. The UVA rays that sneak through windows and clouds are the ones that drive premature aging — the fine lines, the leathery texture, the sunspots that seem to appear overnight in your 40s. They also make existing pigmentation concerns (like melasma) dramatically worse.

Wearing SPF daily isn't vanity. It's the single most effective anti-aging step you can take, and it's the cheapest. A good sunscreen costs less than one fancy serum and does more for your skin than almost anything else in your routine.

What to look for.

A few quick rules we share with every client:

  • Broad-spectrum. This means it blocks both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays. If the label doesn't say it, skip it.
  • SPF 30 minimum. SPF 50+ is better if you're fair, outdoors often, or treating active pigmentation.
  • Mineral over chemical if you have rosacea, melasma, or sensitive skin. Zinc oxide is your friend.
  • Reapply every two hours if you're outside. Morning application alone doesn't cut it past lunchtime.

After any treatment — double down.

If you've just had a peel, laser, or facial, your skin is especially vulnerable. Even a little UV exposure can trigger pigmentation, reverse your results, or cause irritation. We always send clients home with SPF guidance, and we're happy to recommend a formula that works with your skin type.

The bottom line.

You can do every treatment we offer, follow the most perfect at-home routine, and spend a fortune on products — but if you're skipping sunscreen, you're chasing your tail. Start here. Everything else works better when you do.
